Furniture Through the Ages

Furniture is an item or items that fulfill a requirement. The term “furniture” encompasses all movable household equipment pieces like rugs, lamps, and bookcases just as much as more noticeable pieces like beds and tables. These items can be constructed out of a variety of materials including, but not limited to, glass, metal, wood, and plastic. Whether it is a cheap, plastic beach chair or an elegant piece used by the Queen of England, it is all considered to be furniture. People view home furnishings as both necessary and nonessential items.

Over the centuries, furniture designs have changed. Different styles of craftsmanship, such as painting, woodcarving, and gilding have been used by various cultures to enhance furniture design. Furniture in the western part of the world is beautified in appreciation of the styles of the ancient Greek, Chinese, Egyptian, and Gothic empires.

The Greek style of furniture is easily recognized with its tripods and low couches. Ebony and teak engravings are characteristics of ancient Oriental furniture. Because of its lavish gold and ivory carvings, Egyptian furnishings are quite unique and reveal a strong flair for elegance in the woodwork, décor, and body of the designs.

One can presume furniture was created as a result of some type of need. Perhaps one day long ago, cave woman decided she was tired of hanging her dresses on the wall and later finding them covered with dust. She ranted and raved until cave man finally built her a cabinet in which to place them. Later on, cave woman wanted other matching furniture pieces for extra storage, and so, furniture and accessories were born.

Modern home furnishings are built to serve many purposes. Because of this, the furniture looks quite different than years ago, and it is available at lower prices. An example of this multi-use functionality can be clearly seen in the office bed unit. At night, the furniture functions as a resting place which is accompanied by built-in shelves. When the sun rises, the resting place can be quickly transformed into a desk with shelves and chair. The office bed unit is a perfect illustration of how contemporary furnishings can meet many needs. Multi-functional beds have become increasingly popular in some parts of the world. As a result, many other furniture pieces have evolved into multi-use fixtures.

The best furniture is not only aesthetically appealing, but it is also multi-functional, affordable, and environmentally responsible.
